“A sanctified heart—is better than a silver tongue.”
Simeon Ashe
A pastor from a long time ago, Simeon Ashe, said that “A sanctified heart is better than a silver tongue.” Jesus Christ had both. His heart was completely set on obeying his Father and his tongue never spoke a falsehood. His words were kind and ultimately compassionate because they were true. But today we are noting that not only is his every word true and compassionate but even the volume with which he chose to speak reflected mercy. What do I mean?
In front of the tomb of Lazarus, “he cried out with a loud voice, ‘Lazarus, come out.’” (John 11:43) Why did he cry out with a loud voice? Was it to demonstrate his creative power as the very Word of God? (See Gen. 1:3; Col. 1:16) No, although that was evident. Was it necessary to speak loudly to enhance his resurrection power? No, he could have whispered and Lazarus would have come forth. Was it to make sure that Lazarus heard him? No, of course not. And here is an irresistible sidebar. It is interesting to note that he uses his name “Lazarus.” Why? If he didn’t attach Lazarus’ name, then what is to prevent every grave being emptied of its dead as the Word of God calls! Did his voice have to be loud enough to reach Lazarus who rested now in Abraham’s bosom? No, of course not. Then why did Jesus cry out with a loud voice.
If we take John 20:30-31 as the organizing principle or theme of the Fourth Gospel, then the answer becomes clear. Here are the theme verses: “Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.” (John 20:30-31) Jesus speaks with a loud voice to assist those within earshot so that they might believe. It might be as simple as that. The Lord wants those on the very periphery of the crowd to hear his words and to connect him to the resurrection of Lazarus. To what end? See John 11:45. Today, if you have not trusted Christ, then turn from sin and trust the one who has power to bring life to the physically dead and even the spiritually dead. Trust Jesus today.
Unto Jesus be glory,
