“How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who publishes peace, who brings good news of happiness, who publishes salvation, who says to Zion, ‘Your God reigns.’” (Is. 52:7)
Beautiful feet, Isaiah saw the LORD. In a vision, he saw Him high and lifted up. He saw the train of his robe filling the heavenly temple. Isaiah saw the LORD, foreshadowed in the blessed wife of his youth; she who was a virgin would bear a Son. Isaiah saw the LORD, visions upon visions of a Shepherd. A Servant who would serve Yahweh as Yahweh. Isaiah saw the LORD.
Beautiful feet, as Solomon declared over and over in his love song, “How beautiful,” Isaiah used the language of the lover when he declared the beauty of the feet of the one who cries good news. The feet of the one for whom John feels unworthy to untie his sandals. The feet that stumbled, exiled in the wilderness like Israel and yet did not fail where Israel failed. The feet that stepped into the Jordan in righteousness. The feet that stood on the mountain and preached the sermon that eclipses all sermons. The feet that tread upon the waves in order to pass by us in theophanic glory. The feet that were spiked through with roman spikes in the act of crushing the head of that terrible serpent. How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of this One who brings good news. How beautiful!
Oh church arise! Be enthralled by the beauty of your King. He has come and defeated the enemy. There is no longer a need to fear death. There is no longer a need to fear the darkness. There is no longer a need to fear the evil that comes in this valley of death. There is no more need for fear. How beautiful!
How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of Him who brings Good News. He publishes peace with God! He brings good news. Salvation has come! He brings good news. Your God reigns! There is no more need for fear! How beautiful!
In Christ Alone,
