“5 Your steadfast love, O LORD, extends to the heavens, your faithfulness to the clouds. 6 Your righteousness is like the mountains of God; your judgments are like the great deep; man and beast you save, O LORD.” (Psa. 36:5–6)
“The Scripture is the library of the Holy Ghost; it is a code of divine knowledge, an exact model and platform of religion.” (Thomas Watson)
On Sunday, we considered together the wisdom that God has given us through His Word about who we are as human beings and what we are for. It is a relief to know what a something is for. Sometimes I find a screw on the floor in my home. This find always causes me some concern. What in my home is now missing a screw? What important part of our daily lives is now one loose screw closer to falling apart? I search the nearby chairs and tables for holes where the screw could have come from. I ask the children, “Children, do you know where this screw came from?” I am perplexed and concerned until I learn where the screw came from and what it is for. I am relieved and thankful when I can return it to its functional home and stave off another chair purchase for a few more years.
Likewise, it is a comfort to know what human beings are for. We have been given an origin story and a purpose by the Lord God. We were made to bear His image. We are fools if we learn about the purpose of Almighty God for our race and we decide that we will fight against His purpose. What an absurdity! It is as though the screw that I find on my floor could decide that it will not be used for its designed purpose. We should find rest and comfort knowing that we are not required to reinvent that human being. We are not called on to create the purpose and meaning for our lives. God has created us with meaning and purpose, and He has revealed that meaning and purpose to us through his infallible Word.
Perhaps, in the future we will continue our exploration of Genesis 1:26-28. Perhaps we will find more to contemplate about the purpose that God has revealed for our lives. Perhaps you want to study this passage this week and see what you can learn.
In Christ Alone,
Pastor Charles
